Lockdown has opened doors for a swarm of sick producers, it’s given music producers time to manifest their sounds. The DnB space is booming.
Stance DnB is a mix of old Skool jungle beats, electronic sounds and liquid rhythms.
Stance DNB is associated with Subway Sounds, the Sister label to Low Down Deep. You might have recognised his EP Damage Control, it sounds like there is a french horn riding the rhythm of the drums.
His tunes have made it into the sets of MCs who have strongly influenced him.
His newest release, Drilla, is hardcore, wild like the classic DnB sounds and straight away jump up.
I just love the music [DNB]. Me and my friend Callum we were doing this F23 style of type Instagram page. I was using those tunes for the videos as audio. I fell across a few sets like Invaders, Hedex, his Invaders set with Gubz, Easy, back to back with Cree back to back with Hizzle guy’s Invaders set.
Our friend Blaine Arnould introduced Elliot to the usual DnB suspects; Hedex, Dominator, Logan D. His favourite jump up tunes are Ego Trippin - all city - Benny l - low blow and nu Elementz - repent
Growing up as a metalhead Elliot’s heart had a big space for fast tempo beats and rhythmic depth. Some of his favourite metal beats include Slayer, Angel of Death and SlipKnot, Left behind.
When Elliot saw the producing side of tunes he was loving, he soon fell in love with the art of DJing.
I was using free software including F1 studios. DJing wise, I was using that trash-shitty-two-channel-decks... But I’ve stuck at it.
Elliot Heath introduced himself as Stance for our interview.
When did you find Stance DNB?
So I was originally called Substance. Bit cringe, I wanted my music to have substance, but there was another substance at the time. He’s a nice bloke. He reached out to me and said can you change your name? So I changed my name to Stance because I could keep it relatively similar.
So you were taking that Stance
Yeh, she gets it, but keep my logo relatively similar and whatnot. And, um, yeah. And people still associate music I released before with me.
What inspires you
My favourite producers are Potent Bison, who makes liquid music and I love all the roller the old school jungle stuff. I like to try and draw bits from everything, so I can broaden the horizon with my production. I like making bass sounds and I’ve got some cool, unique sounds that only I’ve got so I utilize them.
What are some tunes that you’ve randomly heard going out?
Well a lot of them aren’t out because big DJs love their dubplates. But for me and Jenx, he’s a 15-year-old from Bristol, we made Stamina with Fern Quest who’s an MC from Wales. The list of people who have played it out already, Sub-Zero, New elements, T95, the list just continues, and it’s not coming out for probably four months, five months.
When you’re in your room or on discord with him, just making a tune and then seeing the people you look up to just playing it out, like, it’s part of a lot of sets now. That’s cool to see.
The first tune that blew up for me in terms of getting played out was Damage Control. It was one of those tunes I literally made in a night. It sounds a bit different, sounds like some kind of French horn or something. But I thought: it’s a bit different.
What have you got coming up this summer?
A lot more music, let’s put it this way. I can’t talk about releases too much, but we’re going to be seeing more projects for Logan D and some other new labels that I haven’t released that I’m excited to announce.
What about DJing
So far, I’m going to be playing Egg. I’m gonna be playing at Sakura selections, this will be the second event, the first one popped off.
Other than that, I’m just working on music and getting stuff done. There’ll be lots more events to come but I will be moving to Bristol in a month or so.
I’ve got all my boys in Bristol and I’ve collaborated with a lot of artists and labels there so you will see me playing a lot more.
Once again, thank you so much for speaking with us. We are excited to see everything your doing, we love your vibe and what you produce.
